"El desnudo sigue impresionándome tanto ahora como cuando era un niño"
Clergue was born on August 14, 1934 in Arles, southern France, where he lived most of his life. As a boy he was impressed by the vitality and charm of the local prostitutes, who frequented the grocery store from his parents. Later he studied the structure and proportions of Roman sculptures in a museum near his home. With these studies, not surprisingly, is interested in nude photography.
Most of his early works are made on the beaches of the Mediterranean, near Arles, over the years has collaborated with many models, almost all amateurs, and has played with subjects drawn from mythology. Like his famous series on the myth of the birth of Venus.
